About Us

Why High Flight?

The name “High Flight” was inspired by the famous aviator’s poem by John Gillespie Magee, Jr., a copy of which was carried to the moon by Col. James B. Irwin on the Apollo 15 lunar mission.
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there, I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I’ve topped the windswept heights with easy grace Where never lark, or even eagle flew. And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand and touched the face of God.
– John Gillespie Magee, Jr.

OUR VISION

High Flight Foundation serves as Goodwill Ambassadors delivering a message of hope and peace to the Nations.

About Us

“The Moon & Beyond” DVD

Astronaut Col. Irwin saw earth as few men have.

He felt the awesome presence of God and experienced first hand evidence that showed how intricately God cares for us. Because of the extraordinary life changing event he came away from the moon flight with a profound sense of responsibility to all mankind. His famous quote “Jesus walking on the earth is more important than man walking on the moon,” has been heard around the world echoing the deep transformation that took place in his soul.
To share his experience High Flight Foundation was formed in July 1972 to enable Col. Irwin and his family to encourage others to take a leap of faith and experience the Highest Flight possible with God.
Since the formation of High Flight Foundation we have embarked upon many diversified outreach programs, being Goodwill Ambassadors. Some of the endeavors have included the mobile space museum, Highest Flight Bibles on Airlines, Flags presented to Leaders, Project Uplift; speaking at schools, and a retreat for POW/MIA military families from the Vietnam War, as well as searching for biblical antiquities.
The Irwin Family has also published the following books, authored by Col. Irwin – To Rule the Night, Destination Moon, More Than an Ark on Ararat and More Than an Earthling. Books authored by his wife Mary Irwin – The Moon is Not Enough, Seeing the Invisible, Reflections in the Sons and The Unsolved Mystery of Noah’s Ark
High Flight Foundation continues Col. Irwin’s quest to reach the nations as Goodwill Ambassadors. Since his death in 1991, the family continues to have the opportunity and honor to present National Flags as well as U.S. State Flags, that were carried to the moon, to International Leaders and to the National Governors of the United States of America
We at High Flight Foundation are reaching out to our fellow man encouraging each one to obtain their Highest Flight.

Our Logo

High Flight
The name, “High Flight,” from the title of the well-known poem, arouses feelings associated with the nobler and higher aspirations of man. The word “High” implies an elevation of spirit and motive, and “Flight” combines activity and involvement in life.
The insignia symbolically represents the mission of “High Flight” by presenting two intersecting orbital paths around the earth. Each orbit has a highly elevated apogee (or high point) emphasizing the importance of elevated goals in man’s outreach.
The vertical orbit represents the mutual search between God and man; the horizontal orbit represents man’s outreach to other men; the cross represents the Christian principles embraced by the members of High Flight and is placed at the intersection of the two orbits, signifying the crucial nature of Christ in resolving man’s two greatest enigmas….his relationship with God and his relationship with his brother.
