Flag Presentation
Out of all the moon missions, Apollo 15 was deemed to be the United Nations Flight.
High Flight Foundation and the Irwin family have an exceptional ability for opening doors to nations because of the unique flags which were carried to the moon on board Apollo 15. Out of all the moon missions, Apollo 15 was deemed to be the United Nations Flight.
They carried flags from every nation that were members of the United Nations in 1971 to the moon’s surface. The Apollo 15 astronauts were considered the “Goodwill Ambassador” for the United Nations. Upon their return from the moon they received the first United Nations Peace Medal, given by Secretary General U Thant.
The Irwin Family traveled overseas to foreign countries delivering the flags to their countries leaders, for the people of those nations, with a message of hope and wonderment.
We at High Flight Foundation believe we have a mandate to continue in the footsteps of Apollo 15 Astronaut Col. James B. Irwin as Goodwill Ambassadors.
